Lew's Home Run Ties Game in Ninth Inning Before Falling to No. 3 Stanford in Extras

FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton baseball came up short in extra innings to No. 3 Stanford by a final score of 21-13 Sunday afternoon at Goodwin Field. The Titans are now 1-2 on the year.

Fullerton and Stanford played one of the craziest games at Goodwin Field in recent years. The two teams exchanged blows like heavyweights throughout the nearly five hour game.

The Titans led 7-6 heading into the eighth inning before adding four more runs to take what looked to be a commanding 11-6 lead into the ninth inning.

Caden Connor got the scoring started in the eighth with a solo home run to right field for his first of the season. Nate Nankil would later score on a wild pitch followed by a bases loaded walk and hit by pitch that led to the 11-6 lead.

Stanford came charging back in the ninth inning with seven runs to take a two-run lead, 13-11.

The Titans were down to their final out in the bottom of the ninth inning when Zach Lew hit a two-run bomb over the new clubhouse in left field to tie the game at 13-13 and force extra innings.

Unfortunately, Stanford would go on to score eight runs in the top half of the 10th inning to secure the victory.

The game ended and started as a high-scoring affair. The Cardinal jumped out to an early 3-0 in the first inning lead on a RBI triple and two-run home run.

Fullerton quickly responded in the bottom of the first inning as Moises Guzman hit a single to left field to drive in two runs and get the Titans on the board. One batter later, Brendan Bobo hit a three-run home run over the batter's eye in center field to give the Titans a 5-3 lead.

Jason Blood had a solid Titans debut on the mound, pitching 4.1 innings of relief while allowing one earned run on two hits and striking out six batters.

After an emotional loss the team looks to bounce back Tuesday against Tulane at Goodwin Field. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m.
