Ninth Inning Rally Falls Short at Long Beach

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton dropped the series opener to Long Beach State, 5-4, Friday night at Blair Field. The Titans are now 19-31 and 11-14 in Big West play.

Long Beach jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after scoring three runs in the bottom half of the third inning. The Titans had a chance to get out of the inning with a double play but a fielding error kept the inning going.

The Titans answered with two runs in the top of the sixth inning on a two-run home run by Brendan Bobo, his fifth of the season.

Tyler Stultz had a gutsy performance for the Titans, pitching six innings, allowing just three runs (two earned) while walking three and recording a career-high 10 strikeouts.

The Dirtbags extended their lead in the bottom of the seventh inning on a two-run home run to take a 5-2 lead.

The Titans battled in the top half of the ninth, scoring two runs on a single by Caden Connor to make it a one run game, however, they were not able to overcome the three-run deficit.

Fullerton looks to even the series in game two Saturday afternoon at Blair Field. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
