Titans Come Up Short at UCLA

LOS ANGELES – Cal State Fullerton baseball dropped its road contest to UCLA, 5-4, Tuesday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium. The Titans fall to 2-9 on the year.

UCLA jumped out to an early lead, scoring one run in the first and two in the second to make it 3-0. Fullerton answered in the top of the third inning on an RBI single by Zach Lew

The Bruins scored one run bottom of the sixth to take a 4-1 lead. The Titans responded with three runs in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 4-4. 

Lew reached on an error by UCLA with one out before Brendan Bobo doubled down the right field line to give the Titans runners on second and third with one out. Lew then scored on a wild pitch to make it a 4-2 game. With one on and one out, Jason Brandow doubled to score Bobo and bring the Titans within one. Fullerton would tie the game on an error by the Bruins to allow Brandow to score. 

UCLA scored one run in the bottom of the eighth inning on a double by Michael Curialle to score Kenny Oyama and take the 5-4 lead. 

Timothy Josten got the start on the mound for the Titans and pitched two innings, three runs (two earned) on five hits while striking out three. Josh Howitt (0-2) drew the loss after giving up one run in 0.2 innings pitched.

Thatcher Hurd got the nod for UCLA and pitched 4.1 innings, allowing one earned run on four hits while walking one and striking out seven. Ethan Flanagan earned the win (2-0) after pitching 1.2 shutout innings.

The Titans are back at Goodwin Field for a three-game nonconference series against LMU beginning Friday at 7:00 p.m.
