Titans Lose High-Scoring Game to Pepperdine

FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton baseball dropped a high-scoring game to Pepperdine, 12-8, Sunday afternoon at Goodwin Field. The Titans are now 2-8 on the year. 

The Titans fell behind early, giving up three runs in the top of the first inning. They answered in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI single by Jackson Lyon to score Zach Lew and make it a 3-1 game. 

Fullerton tied the game in the bottom of the third inning as Jack Haley scored on a wild pitch before Nate Nankil singled to bring home Lew. Lew went 2-for-4 in the game with two runs and a walk. 

The two teams exchanged runs in the fourth inning, both on solo home runs as JJ Cruz hit his first career home run in the bottom of the inning to tie it up at 4-4. 

Pepperdine regained the lead in the top half of the fifth inning after scoring two runs. The Titans responded with three runs in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI double by Lyon prior to a two-run home run by Jason Brandow. Lyon went 2-for-4 with one run and two RBI while Brandow went 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run.

The Waves went on to score two runs in the sixth, three in the eighth and one in the ninth to eventually win 12-8. The Titans added one in the eighth on an RBI single by Austin Schell

Christian Rodriguez got the start and went 4.2 innings, giving up six earned runs on nine hits while striking out six. Josh Howitt drew the loss after pitching 0.1 innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on two hits. 

Dane Morrow started for Pepperdine and 4.2 innings, allowing six earned runs on nine hits while striking out five. Nathan Diamond earned the win to improve to 1-1 after pitching three innings and giving up one earned run. 

The Titans look to bounce back Tuesday as the team heads to UCLA for a midweek matchup beginning at 6:00 p.m. PT.
