IRVINE, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton (20-34, 13-22) dropped both games of the doubleheader to UC Irvine (39-16, 31-8) Saturday afternoon at Anteater Ballpark. The Titans lost 7-0 in game and 9-5 in game two of the day.
Game One
The Titans kept up with UC Irvine in terms of hits but it didn't translate to runs. Fullerton recorded eight hits while the Anteaters had nine.
Gavin Kennedy started the game on the bump for Fullerton and pitched four innings, giving up three runs on four hits while walking four and striking out two. Wyatt Johnson pitched four innings in relief, allowing five hits and four earned runs. Johnson walked three batters and struck out two.
Nick Pinto picked up the win to improve to 7-3 on the year. Pinto pitched 7.1 shutout innings, allowing eight hits and one walk while striking out five. Jacob King closed out the game for UC Irvine, pitching 1.2 innings and not allowing a hit.
Game Two
With the Titans trailing 4-0 early in game two of the doubleheader, Austin Schell got the Titans on the board for the first time Saturday afternoon in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI single to drive in Caden Connor and make it a 4-1 game.
Fullerton scored another run in the top of the fifth inning. Nate Nankil got on base with a one-out single and quickly stole second base to give the Titans a runner in scoring position. With two outs, Jake Harvey singled to left field to score Nankil to make it 5-2.
After scoring in the top of the fourth and fifth inning, the Titans gave up one run in the bottom half of the fourth and two runs in the fifth. UCI added two runs in the seventh to extend its lead to 9-2.
Landon Anderson started the game for Fullerton and gave up five earned runs in 3.1 innings of work. Anderson drew the loss and is now 2-2 this season. Trenton Denholm got the nod for UC Irvine and pitched seven innings, giving up two earned runs on six hits. Denholm is now 5-2 on the year.
The Titans narrowed the game in the eighth inning, scoring three runs on just one hit. Fullerton drew four walks to start the inning before Brendan Bobo roped a two-run double to right center field to make it a 9-5 game.
The two teams will meet Sunday afternoon at Anteater Ballpark for the fourth and final game of the series with first pitch slated for 1:00 p.m. PT.
