Titans Drop Two Games In Doubleheader to UC San Diego

FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton (19-23, 12-11) dropped both games of the doubleheader to UC San Diego (14-25, 11-16) Saturday afternoon at Goodwin Field. 

Game One

Josh Urps led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a solo home run, his second of the season, on the first pitch of the at-bat to give Fullerton an early 1-0 lead. 

UC San Diego responded with four runs on two hits in the top of the fifth inning to take a 4-1 lead. The Titans answered with a run in the bottom half of the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Urps to cut the deficit to 4-2. Uprs went 2-for-3 with a run, two RBI and a walk.

Fullerton, however, gave the run right back in the top of the sixth inning on a RBI double by Everett Lau to extend UCSD's lead to 5-2.

Ryan Hare got the start for the Titans and went 4.2 innings, giving up four runs on two hits while striking out four. Hare had a no-hitter going through 4.2 before giving up a two-out single to break it up. The senior is now 0-3 on the season after suffering the loss. 

Izaak Martinez earned the win for UCSD after pitching 3.2 scoreless innings while giving up three hits and striking out four. Martinez improves to 2-1 on the year. Luke Mattson picked up his fourth save of the season, pitching 1.2 innings shutout innings 

Game Two

The Titans trailed 3-0 through five innings before scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull within one run. After Nate Nankil singled to lead-off the inning and advancing to third on a stolen base and then a wild pitch, Caden Connor drove him in with a RBI single through the right side of the infield to get the Titans on the board. Connor would later score from third on a wild pitch.

However, UC San Diego answered with four runs in the top of the seventh inning on a three-run home run and a RBI double to extend its lead. 

Fullerton scored one run in the seventh, eighth and ninth to give themselves a chance late in the game. The Titans had the bases loaded with one out trailing 7-5 but couldn't do anything with it. 

Kyle Luckham pitched eight innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on eight hits while striking out five. Luckham is now 3-7 this season. 

Aren Alvarez improved to 2-6 on the year for the Tritons after pitching five innings and allowing two earned runs on six hits. Ryan Rissas picked up his first save of the season after pitching the final two innings and giving up two runs (one earned).

The Titans look to split the series with UC San Diego as they return to Goodwin Field Sunday afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m. PT.
