DAVIS, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton (13-15, 6-3) opened the four-game series against UC Davis (9-22, 4-13) with a 9-3 victory Friday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium.
With Fullerton already leading 2-0, the team blew the game open in the fifth inning with five runs on five hits. Josh Urps got the inning going with a single before Deylan Pigford hit a RBI double off the wall in right field to score Urps. Pigford recorded his second double of the game in the top of the ninth inning to give him a tied for team-high seven doubles this season.
With Pigford standing on second, Caden Connor came up with his tied for team-high 15th RBI of the season to score Pigford. Following a double from Jason Brandow, Brendan Bobo crushed a three-run home run to right field to put the Titans up 7-0 after five innings. Bobo has two home runs this season with eight RBI.
Like clockwork, Tanner Bibee had another strong outing for the Titans. Bibee tossed seven innings, giving up three runs on five hits with no walks and four strikeouts on his way to improving to 5-3 this season. Fullerton's ace has 45 strikeouts the season to just eight walks.
Fullerton added two runs of insurance in the top of the ninth inning on a two-run single through the left side to score Connor and Pigford. Brandow had an solid game at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a run and two RBI.
The Titans got the scoring going with two runs in the second inning to take an early lead in the game. Bobo led off the inning with a walk and then stole second to get into scoring position for the Titans. Carter White drove him in with a one out single to right field. One batter later, Urps hit a double to left center to drive in White. Urps went 3-for-4 on the day with one run and an RBI.
The two teams meet again Saturday afternoon for a doubleheader with the first game starting at 12:00 p.m. PT.
