Titans Ninth Inning Rally Comes Up Short Against CBU

FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton dropped the final game of the three-game series to California Baptist by a final score of 9-7 Sunday afternoon at Goodwin Field. 

The Titans made a valiant effort to come back late in the game. Trailing 9-4 in the bottom of the ninth inning, Fullerton scored three runs to make it a 9-7 game and put Fullerton within striking distance, however, the rally ultimately fell short. 

After giving up three runs in the first three innings, The Titans looked to get back in the game in the fourth. Zach Lew started off the inning with a single and after advancing to second, Cole Urman came up with a RBI single up the middle to score Lew and get the Titans on the board.

Urman had a career game for the Titans Sunday afternoon, recording a career-high four hits to go along with a career-high four RBI. Following a strong weekend, Urman has now reached base in 16 consecutive games. 

With Deylan Pigford on first and JJ Cruz on second, Urman came up clutch once again with a double to left center, scoring two runs for the Titans and picking up his second and third RBI of the day. 

After entering the game in the fifth inning for Lew, Cruz went on to have a strong day at the plate. Cruz went 2-for-2 with a career-high two runs and a double. 

Jake Vargas made his first career start and went 3.0 innings, allowing two hits and three earned runs. Vargas drew the loss and is now 0-1 this year. 

Drew Necochea started the game for California Baptist and pitched five innings, giving up three hits and one earned run on his way to earning the win to move to 2-0 this year. 

The Titans return to Big West Conference play next weekend as the team heads north for a four-game series against UC Davis beginning Friday Mar. 16.
