Fullerton Opens Series Against CBU with a Victory

FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton (11-14) opened up the three-game series against California Baptist (18-8) with an 8-3 win Friday night at Goodwin Field. 

Tanner Bibee pitched another great game for Fullerton, tossing 7.1 innings while giving up seven hits and two earned runs. Bibee walked just one batter while striking out six. The junior righty is now 4-3 on the season with a 2.70 ERA.

The Titans scored four runs in the bottom of the third inning to take an early lead. Cole Urman led-off the inning with a single to center field to reach base for the 14th consecutive game. Three batters later with Urman on second and Jake Harvey on first, Caden Connor singled through the left side to drive in Urman and put the Titans on top. 

Fullerton then loaded the bases on a sac bunt by Zach Lew which led to a RBI for Jason Brandow after he was hit by a pitch to put the Titans up 2-0. Jackson Lyon kept the inning going with a two-run double to deep left center field to score Lew and Connor and give Fullerton a 4-0 lead.

Lyon came through again in the fifth inning with a sacrifice fly to score Connor and extend the Titans lead to 5-0. Lyon wasn't done yet, he came back in the seventh inning to record his single game career-high, fourth RBI of the game on a single through the right side to score Deylan Pigford. Lyon went 2-for-3 on the night with one run and the aforementioned four RBI. 

Chris Burica came into Friday night's game for CBU with a 5-1 record and a 1.93 ERA but the Titans were able to get to him early in the game. Burica went 5.0 innings, giving up eight hits and five earned runs.

Michael Weisberg came in the game for the final 1.2 innings on the bump for Fullerton and didn't allow a single hit. He walked one batter while also striking out one. Weisber has not allowed a run in his last 6.2 innings pitched. 

The Titans are back at Goodwin Field Saturday afternoon for game two of the series against California Baptist beginning at 12:00 p.m. PT.
