FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton dropped its opening game of Big West Conference play to UC Santa Barbara, 9-2, Friday night at Goodwin Field.

The Gauchos jumped ahead early, scoring one run in the first inning and five in the third before extending the lead with eight runs in the eighth.

The Titans got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning on a double from Zach Lew which was just short of being a home run. Lew drove in Cole Urman after he led off the inning with a single through the left side of the infield. Fullerton added one more in the ninth on a sacrifice fly from Lew to bring home Brendan Bobo

The freshman, Bobo, has shown his strength at the plate recently, hitting two doubles in the last three games. Bobo is hitting .300 on the season with a .500 slugging percentage.

Tanner Bibee started on the bump for the Titans and went 6.2 innings, allowing 11 hits and six earned runs and is now 2-3 this season.

Zach Torra earned the win for UC Santa Barbara after pitching 5.0 innings, giving up five hits and one earned run to move to 1-0 this season.

Fullerton is back at Goodwin Field Saturday afternoon for a doubleheader against the Gauchos with first pitch of game one scheduled for 12:00 p.m. and the second game starting 40 minutes after the conclusion of game one.
