SAN DIEGO – Cal State Fullerton dropped the second game of the series to San Diego, 6-5, on a two run walk-off single in the ninth inning.
Fullerton led 5-4 heading into the bottom of the ninth inning but the Toreros were able to load the bases with just one out before Cam Vasquez singled down the right field line to give San Diego the victory. Eddy Pelc earned the win for San Diego after coming in the game in the eighth and pitching 1.2 shutout innings.
The Titans fell behind early, trailing 4-1 heading into the sixth inning before the offense started to gain some momentum. Jason Brandow helped get Fullerton back into the game with a RBI single to center field, scoring Isaiah Garcia from second base. JT Navyac later scored in the inning on a couple of errors by the Toreros to put the Titans just one run behind after six.
First-year transfer Deylan Pigford easily had his best game as a Titan. Trailing by one in the seventh, Pigford stepped to the plate and crushed a two-run home run to right field to give the Titans a 5-4 lead. The New Mexico native went 2-for-4 on the day with a double, a home run and two RBI.
Michael Knorr pitched a great game for the Titans in relief. Knorr stepped to the mound in the fifth inning and pitched four innings, allowing just one run. Peyton Jones started the game for the Titans, pitching four innings while giving up four runs (three earned). Landon Anderson picked up the loss for Fullerton after putting the winning run on the bases. Anderson is now 1-1 this season.
Fullerton is back at Fowler Park Sunday afternoon for the third and final game against San Diego looking to avoid the series sweep. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. PT.
