Fullerton Loses Hard-Fought Game to Texas

AUSTIN, Texas – Cal State fullerton battled throughout but ultimately came up one run short to Texas Saturday afternoon at UFCU Disch-Falk Field, losing by a final score of 4-3.

Once again the Titans got on the board first but were unable to hold onto their lead. JJ Cruz got things going in the top of the second inning with a two-out double to left center field, driving in Miguel Ortiz. With the hit, Cruz recorded his first collegiate extra base hit. 

Texas immediately responded with three runs in the bottom half of the second inning to take the lead. Peyton Powell recorded the first RBI to tie the game before Murphy Stehly hit a two RBI double down the left-field line to give the Longhorns the lead. 

Fullerton tied the game in the fourth inning on a two RBI single by Zach Lew who had an impressive game, going 3-for-5 while making a couple web gem plays at third base. Lew now has a team-high eight RBI this season with a team-high .362 average.

Kyle Luckham started the game for the Titans and went five innings, giving up three earned runs on seven hits. Titus Groeneweg pitched 2.1 innings of relief and gave up one run on two hits and ultimately recorded the loss to move to 0-1 this season. Michael Knorr got the last two out for the Titans while not allowing a hit. 

Texas starter, Ty Madden, pitched four innings and gave up three runs (one earned) on four hits. Pete Hansen earned the win for Texas after pitching 3.2 innings and only giving up two hits. Hansen is 2-0 this season. Andre Duplainter II recorded his third save of the year after pitching the final inning.
