Fullerton Drops Rubber Game to UC Santa Barbara

FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton dropped the final game of the three-game series to UC Santa Barbara by a final score of 8-7 Sunday afternoon at Goodwin Field.

The Titans (12-13, 1-2) offense kept them in the game, scoring seven runs including a five run inning in the fourth to take the lead at the time. However, the team wasn't able to hold onto the three-run lead over the Gauchos (19-5, 2-1) as they gave up runs in three consecutive innings

Isaiah Garcia and Daniel Cope hit back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to tie the game up at 2-2. It was the first time since April 23, 2017 that the Titans hit back-to-back home runs when Dillon Persinger and Niko Pacheco did it at Cal Poly.

 

Garcia went 2-for-5 at the plate Sunday afternoon with two RBI and one run on his solo shot in the fourth inning. In just his third game back, Cope went 1-for-3 with one run and one RBI.

AJ Curtis added to the Titans home run tally with a solo home run to center field in the bottom of the eighth inning. Curtis recorded a career-high with three hits in the game as he went 3-for-4 with one RBI and two runs.

The Titans have certainly shown that they have added pop in the lineup this season. Last season Fullerton hit 11 home runs this season and with three home Sunday The Titans have hit eight so far in 2019.

Michael McGreevy earned the win for UC Santa Barbara to move to 4-0 on the season. McGreevy went 5.1 innings in relief, giving up six hits and two earned runs. The Titans were able to get to the Gauchos starting pitcher, Rodney Boone, as he gave up seven hits and five runs in 3.2 innings.

Michael Knorr picked up the loss Sunday and is now 2-2 this season. Knorr gave up five runs in five innings. Joe Magrisi finished the final 3.1 innings and gave up just one hit while striking out two batters.

Fullerton looks to bounce back next weekend against Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo who is also 12-13 this season. Saturday's game against the Mustangs will be aired on ESPNU with first pitch at 8:00 p.m. PT.
