Fullerton Holds First Official Practice of 2019, Prepares for Alumni Game Saturday

The journey back to Omaha for Cal State Fullerton began Friday afternoon as the team held its first official practice of the 2019 season.

The 36-man roster competed for the first time as a team in 2019 under the instruction of Head Coach Rick Vanderhook and the coaching staff on Friday. The group took batting practice, competed in fielding drills while ending the session with a full nine-inning scrimmage.

"I really like the way our guys competed today," Vanderhook said. "We have a lot of things we have to get better at but I like the direction this team is going in."

Fullerton will compete in its first game as team Saturday, Jan. 26 at 1:00 p.m. at Goodwin Field in the annual alumni game against over 30 former Titans. Admission to the game is FREE.

The current Titans look to come out strong and get a win over the alumni which is never easy considering the talent that comes back to Goodwin Field to play each and every year. The Titans have only lost twice in 12 games, however, both of those years Fullerton ended up reaching it to the College World Series.

Last year Fullerton took a 6-3 victory over the alumni as Brett Borgogno picked up two hits and scored a run while Mitchell Berryhill drove in a run to help the squad to victory. Like many times with Titans baseball, the alumni game in 2018 was a pitchers duel, going scoreless through five innings before the Titans drove in a run in the sixth.

The Titans come into 2019 armed with four national rankings in preseason polls. Fullerton is ranked 18th in Collegiate Baseball Newspaper's preseason poll, 24th in the USA TODAY Coaches Poll, 25th in DIBaseball's preseason rankings and 28th in Perfect Game's poll.
