OMAHA, NE.--- Cal State Fullerton sophomore closer Brett Conine has been named as one of 25 semifinalists for the 2017 Gregg Olson Award presented by Toolshed Sports. The award honors college baseball's breakout player of the year. The annual award is given to a top amateur baseball player who elevates his game to an elite level throughout the season.
Conine has certainly elevated his game all season long, as he boasts a stellar 1.56 ERA with 14 saves on the year. His 14 saves currently has him tied for sixth on Fullerton's all-time single-season saves list, while he's also tied for ninth in the country in that category.
The Orange, Calif. native picked up back-to-back saves vs. the top-seeded Stanford Cardinal overall the weekend, with the final one clinching the Stanford Regional Championship, sending the Titans to their 13th Super Regional.
Conine has accumulated 37 strikeouts and just six walks in 40.1 innings pitched this season.
This spectacular season comes after Conine went 3-3 with a 5.10 ERA during his freshman campaign.
The Olson Award has been developed to honor college baseball's success stories and showcase players like Olson who have raised the level of their game through hard work, strength of mind and determination. Eligible players will be those who are omitted from major publication's preseason All American prognostications; however by the end of the season their on the field performance will demonstrate that they are among the top amateur baseball players in the nation.
Finalists will be announced during Super Regional action. The winner of the 2017 Gregg Olson Award will be named in Omaha, Nebraska during the College World Series which is to be held this season at TD Ameritrade Park.
