Fullerton Clinches Series Win Over Gonzaga on Sunday

Box Score (PDF)

FULLERTON, Calif.--- All three games were decided by one run in the series, but for the second straight contest, it was Fullerton on the right side of a nail bitter, as the Titans hung on to defeat Gonzaga, 3-2 in the series finale on Sunday out at Goodwin Field.

For Fullerton (9-5), the win brings the Titans to 4-0-1 in series of at least two games this year, while they've now won five of their last six contests overall. Offense came at a premium once again, but Blake Workman (2-0) came through in the spot start for the Titans. He allowed just one run a walk, four hits and struck out four in four innings pitched, earning the win, as Fullerton pitched by committee.

John Gavin and Brett Conine also combined to pitch four fames of shutout baseball, while Conine recorded the save for a second straight game.

Niko Pacheco and Tristan Hildrebrandt each recorded an RBI, while Taylor Bryant drew two walks on the day to lead the Titans offensively.

Gonzaga (6-8) struck for one in the top of the first, but Fullerton quickly responded, as Pacheco came through with a two-out double to right field to score Dillon Persinger, who led the game off with a walk.

The Titans then took advantage of defensive miscues in the bottom of the third. Scott Hurst hustled down the line and reached on a fielding error by the second baseman, allowing Sahid Velenzuela to score after he stole second base literally just pitches earlier. Hildebrandt then came up with a big single to center field to score Hurst after he advanced to second on a passed ball.

With the Titans holding a 3-1 league, things got a little dicey in the sixth, as the Bulldogs put runners at the corners with no one away, but Fullerton got out of trouble, just surrendering one run.

The Titans only obtained three hits, but were able to make up for it by earning five free passes.

Fullerton now shifts its attention to Tuesday, as they'll take on San Jose State at 4pm PT out at Goodwin Field.
