FULLERTON, Calif. - Cal State Fullerton's six-game winning streak came to an end Sunday afternoon with a 2-0 loss to UNLV at Goodwin Field.
The Titans (24-14) were blanked for the fifth time this season as the offense managed five hits and got just four runners past second base against the Rebels (17-22).
Jerrod Bravo was 2-for-4 and extended his hitting streak to five games in the loss. Tanner Pinkston reached safely for the 18th straight game with a first-inning double, going 1-for-3 on the day with a walk.
For the Rebels, A.J. VanMeetren led the way with two hits while Payton Squier and Nick Ames were 1-for-4 with an RBI.
Dean Kremer got the win for the Rebels, going eight shutout innings. He allowed five hits, walked three and struck out four. Ben Wright picked up his ninth save as he pitched a perfect ninth inning.
Blake Quinn was tagged with the loss as he went four innings and allowed two runs, one earned, on five hits. He walked two and struck out a pair. Colton Eastman was spectacular out of the bullpen for Fullerton, pitching the last five innings. He allowed just one hit, walked two and struck out a career-high 10 batters including five straight at one point.
The Rebels took their first lead of the series in the third as Payton Squier lined a two-out single to left-center with two on to plate Max Smith and make it 1-0 UNLV.
They capped the scoring in the fourth inning on an RBI single from Ames, scoring Justin Jones who reached on an error to lead off the frame.
The Titans will host UCLA Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. at Goodwin Field. The game will be broadcast on ESPNU.
Notes: Eastman was the first Titans pitcher to strike out five straight batters since Connor Seabold fanned five straight against Pepperdine on May 31, 2015 at the Fullerton Regional. He was also the second pitcher to fan 10 batters in the series against UNLV… The Titans are now 73-19 all-time against UNLV and 44-8 at home. Fullerton is also now 230-83 all-time against teams currently in the Mountain West Conference and 3-1 against teams from that conference this season.
