FULLERTON, Calif. – Former Cal State Fullerton catcher Kurt Suzuki was chosen as a manager's selection to the American League squad for the 85th Major League Baseball All-Star Game, it was announced Sunday.

Suzuki becomes the sixth former Titan to be selected to the midsummer classic and the first since Ricky Romero was selected in 2011. Suzuki joins the list of former Titans All Stars that includes Romero, Aaron Rowand (2007), Chad Cordero (2005), Phil Nevin (2001) and Tim Wallach (1984-85, 1987, 1989-90).

Suzuki is in the midst of his first season with the Minnesota Twins and 10th overall season in MLB. He is currently batting .305, which would be a career-high, in 73 games. He has 78 hits, 18 doubles, two home runs and 34 RBI. The backstop boasts a .361 on-base percentage, which leads all American League catchers with at least 220 plate appearances, to go along with a .398 slugging percentage as the Twins primary catcher.

In his time at Cal State Fullerton (2002-04), Suzuki batted .390 in 145 games, starting in 119. He collected 174 hits including 28 doubles, four triples, 19 home runs and 123 RBI. He won the Johnny Bench Award in 2004, which is presented to the best collegiate catcher in the nation, after batting .413 in 69 games with 104 hits, 16 home runs and 87 RBI to go along with nine stolen bases in his final year as a Titan, helping the team win the program's fourth national title.

The 85th MLB All-Star Game will be played in Suzuki's home ball park; Target Field in Minneapolis, MN, on Tuesday, July 15 at 5 p.m. and will be televised nationally by FOX.
