Lorenzen Named to Golden Spikes Watch List

Lorenzen Named to Golden Spikes Watch List
FULLERTON, Calif. – Junior Michael Lorenzen was named to the 2013 preseason Golden Spikes Award Watch List announced by USA Baseball on Thursday as the organization marked its first step toward identifying the top amateur baseball player in the country.

Sponsored by Major League Baseball, the Golden Spikes Award will be presented in 2013 for the 36th time.

For Lorenzen, this is the second consecutive year the native of Anaheim, Calif., has entered the season on the preseason Golden Spikes Watch List. He was also the only player from the Big West Conference selected.

This is the second preseason watch list Lorenzen has been named to entering 2013. Last week, he was one of 75 players named to the initial watch list for the ninth annual National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Award, given to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I baseball.

The junior outfielder and closer returns to the diamond after an All-American season in 2012. Lorenzen has received four preseason All-American selections entering 2013. He was projected as the National Player of The Year by Collegiate Baseball, and was named to the 13th annual NCBWA Preseason All-America second team as well as the Perfect Game Preseason College All-American second team. Most recently, he was selected to the 2013 Baseball America Preseason All-America second team.

Lorenzen, who garnered All-American honors as well as Big West Conference First Team accolades in 2012, developed into one of the nation's top two-way players, starting 57 games in centerfield while making 20 appearances on the mound.

For Cal State Fullerton, Lorenzen did not allow a run in 18 of his 20 appearances. He garnered double first-team All-Big West Conference honors as a utility player on offense, and as a closer on the pitching staff. His 16 saves in 17 chances tied him for second in program history with Nick Ramirez (2011) behind only Scott Wright's school record of 22 saves in 1984.

In addition, Lorenzen posted a 2-0 record with a 1.23 ERA in 22 innings pitched while striking out 17 batters.

He finished the season with a .297 batting average, third on the team, and led the squad with 38 runs, 20 doubles, 101 total bases, a .435 slugging percentage, 69 hits (tie), three triples (tie), 43 RBIs, 10 multiple-RBI games and 14 stolen bases.

The Titans open the 2013 season at Goodwin Field vs. USC on Friday. The Titans will continue opening weekend at home with a doubleheader against Nebraska on Saturday, before traveling to CSU Bakersfield to close out the weekend on Sunday.

More on the Golden Spikes Watch List

The Watch List features 50 of the nation's top amateur players, and it will be a "rolling" list to ensure that athletes can play themselves into consideration for the Golden Spikes Award. The Golden Spikes Award trophy will be awarded live on MLB Network for the third year in a row, with a live presentation scheduled during "The Rundown" on Friday, July 19. Through USA Baseball's partnership with Major League Baseball Advanced Media (MLBAM), the presentation will also be simulcast with a live stream available from GoldenSpikesAward.com and USABaseball.com.

Following the release of a second, 60-player Watch List on Thursday, May 2, USA Baseball officials will announce the 30 semifinalists for the 2013 Golden Spikes Award on Tuesday, May 28. The list of 30 will then be sent to a voting body consisting of past USA Baseball National Team coaches and press officers, members of the media that closely follow the amateur game, select professional baseball personnel and current USA Baseball staff, representing a group of more than 200 voters in total.

Fan voting will once again be a part of the Golden Spikes Award in 2013. Tuesday, May 28, marks the day when amateur baseball fans from across the country will be able to vote for their favorite semifinalist on GoldenSpikesAward.com. As part of this selection process, all voters will be asked to choose three players from the list of 30 names.
