Northridge, Calif. - Carolyn Ellis finished third overall to lead Cal State Fullerton's women's squad to the championship of the Cal State Northridge Cross Country Invitational on a hot Friday evening that saw both the men's and women's races shortened to 5K.

The Titans totaled 53 points to edge USC with 61 points.

In the men's race, John Carroll placed eighth to pace the Titans to a second-place finish with 55 points behind UC Riverside, which won with a perfect score of 15.

"At 4:30, the heat index was 107 degrees," said Head Coach John Elders. "So for runners' safety, they shortened the course to 5K plus about 112 yards. That made the women's race about 25 seconds longer than a 5K and the men about 18 or 20 seconds longer.

"Our goal at this meet was to have a good experience and build our confidence for the Big West Conference championships. Despite the conditions it was a strong effort for us and mission accomplished.

"The men had a nice pack. Tyler Reed led a strong push at the 1-mile mark. Corey Bullock had one of his best efforts and Erik Estrada ran his strongest race of the season.

"Yomaira Hernandez strguggled with the heat and faltered in the latter part of the women's race."

Andrea Aguilar finished in sixth place with Hernandez in seventh.
