Devine, Myers Shine in Big West Finals

Northridge, Calif. - Senior Raelynn Devine broke a 20-year old school record in the 200 meters and junior Garrett Myers upset the defending national champion to win the triple jump Saturday in leading Cal State Fullerton to a fifth place for the women and a sixth place for the men at the 2008 Big West Conference Track & Field Championships at Cal State Northridge.

Devine placed third in the 200 in a time of 24.08 to break Lori Shaw's CSF mark of 24.30 set in 1988.

Myers qualified for the NCAA Regionals with a winning leap of 51 feet, 8 1/4 inches to edge Cal State Northridge's Dashalle Andrews (51 feet, 5 inches) in the triple jump.

The Fullerton women amassed 89.5 points to finish behind host CSUN at 189, UC Riverside at 143, Cal Poly at 126 and Long Beach State at 110.5.

The Fullerton men had 77.5 points to trail Long Beach State at 185, CSUN at 159, Cal Poly at 116, UC Santa Barbara at 91.5 and UC Irvine at 83.

"I was really pleased with the way the team came together this weekend," said CSF Head Coach John Elders. "With a few exceptions, I thought we maximized our point potential. The kids really competed well. It was a good weekend for us."

Other Titan highlights:

Sophomore Roberto Archibold repeated as Big West champ in the 400 meter hurdles in a career best time of 51.66 to improve his NCAA regional qualifying mark.

Freshman Lauren Williams dominated the women's 100 hurdles, winning by 0.23 in an NCAA Regional qualifying time of 13.91.

Freshman Ciara Short placed second in the women's 400 in an NCAA qualifying time of 54.34.

Carolyn Ellis followed up Friday's win in the steeplechase with a third-place showing in the women's 5,000 meters.

The Titan women ran third, fifth and seventh in the 200 meters with Ciara Short trailing Devine in fifth in a career best 24.33 and Kristyne Hanberg seventh in 24.59.

Freshman Andrew Sullivan placed second in the pole vault at 16 feet, 3/4 of an inch, with teammate Andrew Little placing fourth.

Jonathan Golden, who won the high jump on Friday, placed third in the triple jump.

Grace Gonzalez followed up her runnerup showing in the 10K to run fourth in the 5K.

The men (Lawrence Trice, Garrett Myers, Aaron Pickens and Roberto Archibold) ran a seasonal best of 3:12.53 in the 4x400 relay.

The women (Chazz Evans, Raelynn Devine, Ashley Taylor and Kristyne Hanberg) ran a season's best of 46.20 to place third in the 4x100.
