Northridge, Calif. - Senior Carolyn Ellis won her second steeplechase title and the Titan men took three of the top five places in the men's high jump to highlight Cal State Fullerton's efforts on Day One of the Big West Conference Track and Field Championships at Cal State Northridge. The host Matadors lead the team scoring for both men and women. Fullerton is in fourth place in women's scoring and fifth on the men's side.
Ellis' win was one of the most dramatic of the day. The 2008 Big West titlist held the lead with about a lap to go but fell going over the final barrier and was passed by UC Santa Barbara's Katie Voigtlander. But Ellis got up and caught the Gaucho runner and passed her with about 100 meters to go to win in 10:30.36 and give Fullerton its third consecutive women's steeplechase crown. Julianne Masciana won the race last year for CSF.
Laron Brown must missed out in his attempt to defend his Big West high jump title. Both he and Lance Gonzales of Northridge cleared 6-feet, 10 1/4 inches but Gonzales cleared the bar on his second attempt while Brown needed a third try. Titan teammate Danny Savoie took fourth with a career high 6-feet, 8 inches and Lamar Oliphant was fifth at the same height with one more miss to give Fullerton 16.5 points in the event.
The men also got points from Julius Joseph's fourth place in the hammer throw at 179-7.
The women got 12 points in the women's pole vault with Alison Stamos second at 11-10 3/4 and Ginny English fifth at the same height. Other scoring came from Jameena Hunt's fourth in the women's hammer at 166-11 and Bonnie Sorensen's fifth in the long jump at 19 feet, 3/4 inch.
Qualifying for Saturday's fiinals in running events were Ciara Short in the 200 and 400, Lauren Williams in the 100, 200 and 100 hurdles, Chazz Evans in the 200 and 400, Gail Munoz in the 1500, Bryan Luther in the men's 100 and 200 and DeAndrae Woods in the 200.
