Titan Men, Women Both Place Second at Sacramento

Sacramento, Calif. - Matt Turner broke his own school record in the 110 hurdles and Karina Ortiz bettered her CSF standard in the steeplechase Saturday to help Cal State Fullerton's men and women's track and field teams place second at the Sacramento Invitational hosted by Sacramento State.

Turner trimmed seven hundredths of a second off his previous best by running 14.44 into a slight headwind to finish second in his race. Ortiz ran 11:09.16 to win the steeplechase and better her record of 11:12.88 set earlier this season.

Turner also posted a regional qualifying mark in the long jump of 24 feet, 3 3/4 inches to win that event. He earlier qualified in the high jump.

Sacramento State won the men's competition with 143.5 points ahead of CSF at 133, Eastern Washington at 107 and Stanislaus State at 104.5. Nevada won the women's competition with 156 points to 121 for Fullerton, 105 for Sacramento State and 78.5 for Portland State.

Other Fullerton highlights:

-- In the men's sprints, Marques Barosso won the 100 in 10.90 into a headwind and placed second in the 200 at 21.72.

-- Jason Graney ran a personal record of 3:54.53 to win the 1500 meters with Damien Nieves posting a PR at 3:58.07 for third place.

-- Scott Hutchison had PRs in both the hammer (177 feet, 5 inches for second place) and the shot put (50 feet, 9 1/2 inches for third place).

-- Chase Frazier stepped in for Aaron Williams to help the men win the 4x100 relay in 41.04.

-- In the women's distances, Maria Blazquez ran a season's best 4:45.89 to finish third in the 1500 and Dahamar Perez won the 5000 meters in 18:05.00, a personal best by about 9 seconds.

-- Dinah Clark had a PR of 14.27 to finish third in the 100 hurdles.

-- Amanda Eichmann finished third in the steeplechase in a PR of 11:35.64.

-- Yewande Findley ran PRs in both the 100 (12.14 for second place) and the 200 (25.04 for third place).

-- Antonia Vega won the 200 in 24.71 into a headwind.

-- Nancy Blake (55.50) and Kandace Wilson (PR of 56.24) ran one-two in the 400.

-- Brittany McClellan had a PR of 2:17.95 to place fifth in the 800.
