Fresno, Calif. - A one-two-three sweep in the women's 400 meters and a best-ever second-place showing behind UCLA by the men highlighted Cal State Fullerton's efforts Saturday at the Cal-Nevada Championships at Fresno State.
Kandace Wilson won the 400 in 54.69 and led teammates Kimiah Hudson (second in 54.82) and Nancy Blake (third in 55.08) across the tape as the Titan women placed fifth overall in the team standings. Other women's highlights included Antonia Vega running fifth in the 100 and fourth in the 200 (personal best of 24.48); Dinah Clark third in a personal best of 14.0 in the 110 hurdles and the 4x400 relay team second to UCLA and the 4x100 squad second to San Diego State with a pair of school records.
Wilson, Hudson, Yewande Findley and Vega broke 46 seconds for the first time in school history at 45.97. The team of Wilson, Hudson, Kristyne Hanberg and Hudson combined for a time of 3:41.66, breaking the old mark by two-hundredths of a second.
San Diego State won the women's team competition with 166 points followed by UCLA (147), UCSB (79 1/3), Fresno State (79) and the Titans (67 1/3) in the 21-team field.
Victories in the 1500 meters by Jordan Horn at a personal best of 3:52.69, by the 4x100 relay team and a one-two (tie) finish in the high jump by Jonathan Golden (personal best of 7 feet, 2 1/2 inches) and LeRon Brown (NCAA regional qualifying mark of 6 feet, 10 3/4 inches) paced the men to 111 points, behind only the Bruins at 242. Fresno State was third at 85 followed by UC Davis (79) and UC Santa Barbara (72) in the 20-team field. Coach John Elders was voted coach of the meet for the men's efforts.
Garrett Myers also qualified for the NCAA regional meet with a triple jump of 50 feet, 5 1/2 inches, good for fourth place on Saturday. Personal bests were turned in by pole vaulters Andrew Little and Nathan Skankey, both of whom went over 16 feet (plus three quarters of an inch) for the first time.
