Westwood, Calif. - Sophomore Ciara Short continued her recent string of record-setting peformances for the Cal State Fullerton track and field team Sunday at the Cal/Nevada Championships at UCLA by running the second fastest 400 meters by a United States woman this season.
Short won the event in 53.54, which is the best time for a woman in NCAA competition. It shattered her week-old Cal State Fullerton record of 54.30. The previous CSF record had stood for 20 years at 54.31.
Short also placed fourth in the 200 meters with a time of 24.07 in the finals. In the preliminaries she ran 23.99 to set another school record.
Short stole the thunder from teammate junior Jameena Hunt, who shattered her own school record in the shot put. Hunt finished third at 48 feet, 10 3/4 inches, to easily break her CSF mark of 46 feet, 1 1/4 inches. Prior to this season her best mark was 45 feet, 10 inches.
In team scoring, the Tian men placed among 22 teams while the women were 13th out of 24 squads.
Lauren Williams qualified for NCAA Regionals with a time of 13.83 to place fourth in the women's 100 meter hurdles.
On the men's side, Garrett Myers took third in the 400 meters in 47.81. Erik Estrada PR'd by about 3 seconds in running seventh in the 1500 meters at 3:53.50. Bryan Luther made the finals of both sprints, taking sixth in both the 100 (10.84) and 200 (21.56).
Meanwhile, on Friday at Stanford, Juliane Masciana qualified for NCAA Regionals in the steeplechase, running 14th in Section One in a time of 10:31.83.
A limited number of Titans will compete next weekend in the Florida relays in Gainesville.
