Women Tie for Second

March 28, 2010

Los Angeles, Calif. - Titans won four individual events as the Cal State Fullerton women's track and field squad had one of its best team performances ever Sunday, tying for second place on the final day of the California/Nevada Championships at UCLA.

Lauren Williams won the 100 hurdles, Jameena Hunt won the discus and Ciara Short won the 200 and placed second in school record time in the 400 to lead the Titans to 84 points and a deadlock with San Diego State behind Cal State Northridge, which totaled 98 points. Host UCLA was fifth with 66 points. The Titan men placed 13th with 23 points as the host Bruins dominated that side of the meet with 175 points to runnerup Long Beach State's 88.

Short won the 200 in 23.88 to win by 34/100s over Shahnel Woodley of UNLV. In the 400, she was clocked in 53.22 to break her school mark of 53.54 set last year and trail only Nicole Stone of San Diego state (52.89).

Williams won the hurdles in 13.47, nipping Sirena Williams of UC Davis, who clocked 13.55.

Hunt was eighth in the discus preliminaries but bested the field with a top throw of 166 feet, 2 inches, to win by 10 feet over Lauren Guerrieri of USC. Hunt had placed fourth in the hammer throw Friday when Carolyn Ellis won the 5000 meters.

Both relay teams placed third.

On the men's side, Julius Joseph placed third in the shot put at 55 feet, 11 1/4 inches. In the pole vault, Andrew Sullivan had a season high at 15 feet, 7 inches to tie for eighth with teammate Shawn McNany, who tied his personal best. Marc Person had a personal best at 15 feet, 1 inch in 14th place.

"The women did a great job," said CSF Head Coach John Elders. "This was by far our best team performance in the Cal/Nevada Championships or any championship meet for the women.

"THe 4x400 relay team was about 7 seconds faster than their season's best and might have won the event if we had been in the same heat with San Diego State and Northridge. The men's 4x100 team also was about a second better than their best."
