Los Angeles, Calif. - Cal State Fullerton junior Jameena Hunt broke her week-old school record in the women's hammer throw and senior Carolyn Ellis won the women's 5,000 meters Saturday to highlight the Titans' efforts on the first day of the California/Nevada Track & Field Championships at UCLA.
Hunt fouled five times but had a measurable throw of 180 feet, 5 inches on her second attempt to best her mark of 178-2 set last week at USC. Ellis won her race in 16:51.18.
Yomaira Hernandez ran third in the 10,000 meters at 36:20.41.
Bonnie Sorensen took fifth in the long jump at 18 feet, 6 inches. Alison Stamos set a personal best in the women's pole vault at 12 feet, 7 1/2 inches to finish sixth. Her previous best was 12-2.
Julius Joseph placed sixth in the men's hammer with a best throw of 180 feet, 3 inches.
In preliminaries, Lauren Williams qualified second in the 100 meter hurdles at 13.73 and Ciara Short qualified first in the 200 at 23.78 and second in the 400 at 54.25.
"The women had a good first day," said Head Coach John Elders. "We should be pretty competitive in the team scoring tomorrow."
