March 19, 2011

Los Angeles, Calif. - Jayson Perez won the men's 3000 meters and Ciara Short captured the womens 400 meters in her outdoor season debut to highlight Cal State Fullerton's efforts Saturday at the Trojan Invitational at USC.

Perez ran 8:41.66 to beat runnerup Adrian Rafiee of USC by a little more than one second.

Short won her race in 52.90 with teammate Katie Wilson sixth in 56.25 to go with another sixth-place performance in the 200.

"Ciara had a strong start to her outdoor season," said CSF Coach John Elders. "That's the best opening meet time she has ever had. And Wilson's double in the 200 and 400 was impressive, too."

The Titans also had numerous third-place finishes including Grace Gonzales in 10:15.96 in the 3000 meters; Ginny English at 11 feet, 5 3/4 inches in the women's pole vault; Bonnie Sorensen at 17 feet, 9 3/4 inches in the long jump; Lauren Williams in the 100 meter hurdles in 14.07; and the women's 4x100 relay team (Williams, Wilson, Carol Chang & Krizia Apelar) in 46.59. Finishing fourth were Eric Grunbaum at 47 feet, 7 3/4 inches in the shot put and the men's 4x100 relay team (Jestin Blackmon, DeAndrae Woods, Javon May and Tony Crutchfield) in 42.44.
