"This was the largest Ben Brown Invitational ever with approximately 1,300 athletes and over 2,000 entries," said Fullerton Head Coach John Elders. "Most of our athletes not only competed but also assisted the coaching staff with putting on the meet. Needless to say, it was a long weekend for everybody but a very successful one for Cal State Fullerton track & field.
"We were able to put on a high quality meet and our athletes represented our program with some outstanding performances. I'm very thankful to my coaching staff, our athletes, alumni and parents who helped make this such a successful event."
Cal State Fullerton senior Scott Hutchison (second in the Big West in '06) met the NCAA regional standard for the hammer by throwing a seasonal best of 183-feet, 9 inches to highlight the field activity Friday on the opening day of the Ben Brown Invitational at Cal State Fullerton and Mt. San Antonio College.
In the distance carnival Friday, sophomore Mandy Eichmann (fourth in the Big West in '06) won the 3000m steeplechase in a person best 11:15.81 and Andrea Aguilar won the women's portion of the combined 10K in her first 10K ever.
Saturday's competition started off with a bang when the men's 4 x 100 meter relay ran a seasonal best 40.55 to qualify for the NCAA Regional meet for the second year in a row. After meeting the qualifying standard last year in its last opportunity at the Big West Championships in May, the team consisting of Jon Pratter, Marques Barosso, Chris Epstein and Lawrence Trice got the standard out of the way early this year.
Pratter also posted PR's in the 100 meters with a 10.61 and the 200m in 21.54. Three other Titans dipped under 22 seconds -- Marques Barosso 21.55, Lawrence Trice, 21.80 and Chris Epstein 21.94. Freshman Roberto Archibold took a break from running the 400m hurdles and won his section in the 400m, posting a personal best of 48.0 The Titan pole vaulters had a nice competition led by freshman Andrew Steben, who jumped a seasonal best of 15 feet, 5 inches.
While the male sprinters got Saturday off to a great start, the lady Titans finished the meet strong by dominating the 4 x 400 meter relay. The team of Kimiah Hudson, Nancy Blake, Brittany McClellan and Kandace Wilson cruised to victory in 3:46.7. Dinah Clark ran a seasonal best in the 100 hurdles with a 14.22, placing 2nd. Wilson and Kristyne Hanberg looked strong in the 200 meters, running 24.68 and 24.88, respectively.
In the field events, Jameena Hunt bettered her one-week-old school record in the discus with a throw of 146 feet, 5 inches. Kelly MacLean and Dalya Taman were among four pole vaulters who tied for third place at 12 feet, 2 inches. That height was a seasonal best for MacLean.
