Williams, Myers Qualify for Nationals

May 30, 2009

Eugene, Oregon - Lauren Williams finished second in the women's 100 meter hurdles and Garrett Myers placed a surprising fifth Saturday in the men's triple jump at the NCAA West Regional Track and Field Championships to give Cal State Fullerton two more qualifiers for the NCAA finals next month in Arkansas.

Williams was clocked in 13.25 seconds to trail only Shalina Clarke of USC, who ran 13.17. Myers jumped 50 feet, 9 1/2 inches to earn his first berth in the finals. High jumper Johnathan Golden and discus thrower Jameena Hunt qualified for nationals on Friday. This is the first time the Titans have qualified a female since distance runner Heather Killeen in 1995.

Failing to qualify Saturday were Juliane Masciana, who finished 13th in the women's 3000 steeplechase in 10:39.36. She lost her shoe when stepped on from behind by another competitor early in the race. Ciara Short came up one place shy in the women's 400 meters, finishing sixth in 53.87. Andrew Sullivan's best pole vault was 16 feet, 1 1/4 inch, which left him in 29th place. Hunt fouled three times and did not post a legal mark in the shot put.

Williams and Golden will depart Monday with Coaches Brandon Campbell and Brandit Copper. Hunt and Myers will travel Tuesday with throws coach Edmund Pula.
