Irvine, Calif. - Juliane Masciana broke one school record and Bonnie Sorensen came up one inch short of the long jump standard Saturday at UC Irvine to highlight Cal State Fullerton's performances on the first day of the Asics/Steve Scott Invitational Track and Field Meet.

Masciana ran 10:15.96 to win the women's 3000 meter steeplechase and easily better Carolyn Ellis' year-old mark of 10:26.62. Masciana's mark is the third best in Big West Conference history, third in the West region this year and the 14th best nationally.

Sorensen tied for third in the long jump, topping her previous best by about half a foot with a mark of 19 feet, 4 1/4 inches. The school record set in 2002 by Anna Doty is 19 feet, 5 1/4 inches.

The Titans also got a strong performance from Brett Handa, with a PR in the men's 5000 meters at 14:37.27 for a second-place finish. Grace Gonzales ran second in the women's 5000 at 17:06.72.
