FULLERTON, Calif. — The Big West has named Cal State Fullerton head coach Marques Barosso Men's Track and Field Coach of the Year and John Clifford Men's Track Co-Athlete of the Year, the conference announced Friday.
Barosso garnered Big West Men's Coach of the Year honors for the second consecutive season after leading the Titan men's track and field program to its third consecutive Big West Championship last weekend. Barosso, who is in his second year as Fullerton head coach, led the Titans' men's program to 184.5 points in the final team standings, edging out rival Long Beach State for the top spot.
Barosso helped lead five different Titan men to individual wins at the conference championships last weekend. This included sprinter John Clifford, as well as hurdlers Matthew Uballe and Reyte Rash. Hawkin Miller won the men's shot put and Christian Wood took first in the men's long jump.
Clifford was named Big West Men's Track Co-Athlete of the Year after an impressive showing at The Big West Championships. He won the men's 100m with a wind-aided time of 10.26 before placing second in the men's 200m, clocking a personal-best time of 20.98. Clifford was named The Big West Men's Track Athlete of the Meet at the conclusion of the two-day competition. He shares Men's Co-Athlete of the Year honors with Cal Poly's Aidan McCarthy.
Clifford is among nine Titans who Barosso will oversee at next week's NCAA West Preliminary meet in Sacramento. Clifford will compete in the men's 100m, while Fullerton's men's team will also feature competitors in the men's 110m hurdles, 400m hurdles, pole vault and long jump.
