Titans Complete Competition at Multis, Oxy Invite

FULLERTON, Calif. --- Senior Ifunanya Gwacham totaled a personal best 4,570 points in the heptathlon to place ninth at the Big West Conference Multi Events Championships on Saturday at Titan Track Complex.

Gwacham finished just one place out of scoring for Cal State Fullerton as part of the Big West Championships which will continue next weekend. Gwacham placed sixth with a throw of 31.20 meters in the javelin and placed seven spots higher than in 2016.

Long Beach State's Riley Cooks became the second two-time heptathlon champion from LBSU, joining Ami Ice from 1989 and 1991.  She is the first Big West athlete to win in back-to-back seasons since Nevada's Janel Chandler (1997-98).

The native of Coarsegold, Calif. earned the title with 5,671 points, bettering her winning mark of 5,414 from 2016.  The 5,671 points represented the second-highest winning total in the 33-year history of the event.  Cooks nearly unseated UC Santa Barbara's Barbara Nwaba as the meet record holder, just missing Nwaba's 5,709 total from 2012.

Junior Jordan Agnew finished in 15th place for the Titans with 4,310 points.

At the Oxy Invite at Occidental College, Thaddeus Smith clocked his fastest time of the season in the 200 meters at 21.53.

Darion Zimmerman's time of 47.28 in the 400 meters was his fastest of the year as he finished fourth overall and first among collegiate runners.

Shelby Hernandez, Jr., clocked a time of 1:51.08 in the 800 meters for a second place finish, while in the women's 100 meters, freshman Naiah Boardingham set a new PR in a time of 12.26.

The Titans return to action on Friday and Saturday at the Big West Conference Championships hosted at Titan Track Complex for the first time since 1999.
