Flores Sets New School Record in Day One at UNLV Spring Invite

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Cal State Fullerton men and women's track and field team began action at the University of Las Vegas Spring Invitational on Friday as Junior Jessica Flores set a new Fullerton school record in the hammer throw after tossing a personal-best 59.88 meters to take first place in the event.

The Fresno, Calif. native shattered Cal State Fullerton's previous school record of 185-feet-1 inch, set in 2010 by Jameena Hunt, after her fourth attempt in the competition flew 196-feet-5 inches.  Flores took home the top spot in the hammer throw event, beating out second-place Cortney Miller from UNLV after her fifth attempt was thrown 59.58m.

Flores was joined by Amanda Mercado and Alexandra Kemp in the hammer throw on Friday, with Mercado posting a final throw of 50.79m and Kemp finished with a distance of 49.70m.  Mercado will be back in action Saturday in the shot put competition and Flores will attempt to follow up her record-breaking performance in the hammer throw in the discus throw.

The only other Titan in action on Friday in Las Vegas was Taylor Frank.  The senior began action in the heptathlon competition by taking part in the 100m hurdles, shot put and 200m dash.  Frank finished with a time of 15.06 seconds in the 100m hurdles, threw 7.84m in the shot put, and ran 26.92 sec. in the200m dash.

The Titans continue competition at the UNLV Spring Invitational tomorrow with both track and field events getting underway at 9:00 a.m.
