Gordon and Gjonovich Named Big West Scholar-Athletes of the Year

2014 Big West Scholar Athletes of the Year

IRVINE, Calif. – Junior Joshua Gordon and senior Adriana Gjonovich were named Cal State Fullerton’s Big West Scholar Athletes of the Year, the conference announced Thursday.

The 2014 Big West Male and Female Scholar-Athletes of the Year from the nine conference institutions will be honored at a special banquet on Thursday, March 12 at the Wyndham hotel in Anaheim, Calif.  Each institution selected its own honorees.

Joshua Gordon

A junior on the Titans men’s track & field team, Josh is the team captain and one of the top sprinters for the squad.  A member of the Dean’s List, he also serves as Secretary for the Kappa Omicron Honor Society.  He serves as a Resident Advisor and is involved with the Male Success Initiative as a mentor and a Board Member.  A Kinesiology major, Josh plans to attend graduate school and medical school.  He hopes to one day become a chiropractor and a track and field coach.

Gordon was one of Cal State Fullerton's top sprinters in 2014, earning top-ten finishes in 15 of 21 events on the season.  In the Steve Scott Invitational on May 4, Gordon crossed the finished line with a season-best time of 11.01 seconds to take first place overall.  Gordon was also part of the 4x400 meter relay team that finished first earlier in the year at the UC Riverside Invite on Mar. 29, finishing with a time of 3:14.73 sec.  The Northridge, Calif. native will begin his junior campaign in the 400m dash on Saturday at the Riverside Community College Open in Riverside, Calif.

Adriana Gjonovich

A senior midfielder, Adriana helped lead the Titans soccer team to back-to-back Big West Conference Tournament Championships.  She has earned Big West Conference Academic All Conference and Scholar-Athlete honors.  Adriana has also been named to the Dean’s List on six occasions.  She serves as the Vice-President of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and is actively involved with an afterschool program that provides tutoring to junior high students.  A Kinesiology major, Adriana plans to attend medical school with the ultimate goal of becoming an orthopedic surgeon.

In 2014, she played in 18 games for the Titans, making seven starts. She tallied three shots on goal and 10 overall. She scored just one goal on the season but it was a critical one as she found the back of the net in the 83rd minute to lift the Titans to a 1-0 victory over Cal Poly at Titan Stadium on Nov. 2, helping Fullerton clinch its seventh Big West Conference regular season title and first since 2012. It also helped the Titans finish the season undefeated in Big West play, going 6-0-2. It was the first time Fullerton had finished conference play undefeated since the 1996 team did so with a 6-0-1 record.
