FULLERTON, Calif. – With the Cal State Fullerton Athletics Hall of Fame slated to induct the Class of 2021 on February 10, we continue unveiling each of our prestigious honorees on FullertonTitans.com. Today we honor Giovanni Lanaro and his legacy as a Track & Field athlete.
Lanaro's pole vaulting career was an incredible one. While competing as a Titan from 2002-2004, the San Gabriel Valley native garnered the Cal State Fullerton record (18'04"1/2) and three NCAA Division I All-American Honors. Lanaro vaulted his way to Big West Conference Individual Championships in 2003 and 2004 where he posted 17'8"1/2 and earned 8th at the NCAA Championships in 2003 and 2004.
Prior to his success as a Titan, Lanaro competed for two seasons at Mt. SAC where he captured the 2000 California Community College State Championship as a freshman and captured the 2001 USA National Community College Championship in his sophomore campaign. Along the way, he broke the long-standing school record for 17'01" an incredible eight times and posted a best of 17'08"1/2.
After his outstanding career at Cal State Fullerton, Lanaro made his mark on the international scene. Holding dual citizenship with the US and Mexico, he represented Mexico at four World Outdoor Championships, two World Indoor Championships, the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, and the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. In 2007, Lanaro set a new Mexico, Central American, and Mt. SAC Relays Record by vaulting over 19'01".
Lanaro is now in his fifth season as the women's track & field head coach at Mt. SAC (16th with the program) where he continues to make an impact on the sport, developing state championship level student-athletes such as himself.
