OC Register: Isaac Salazar sharpens his training tools for Titan athletes during COVID-19

By Brian Robin

One of the fixtures of the Cal State Fullerton baseball program you see at games is a tent. That tent is typically used for special events, to entertain donors and other VIPs during games. But last year, that tent found another purpose for a different branch of VIPs.

So did a massive swath of rubber mats, usually found in horse stalls. And yes, those are outdoor-friendly kettlebells and Kevlar medicine balls you see on those rubber mats usually found in horse stalls. The "horses" under the tent on those rubber mats look familiar to Cal State Fullerton athletics fans. You know them as various members of the Titans' athletic teams. And they know this new training outpost due to two factors: COVID-19 and the creative ingenuity of Isaac Salazar.

Cal State Fullerton's director of strength and conditioning since 2012, Salazar is nothing if not adaptable. When COVID-19 shut the doors of his weight room/office, Salazar first took things virtual, creating exercises and programs for Titan athletes to do without equipment and exercises to do with minimal equipment. The exercises eventually were put on video and uploaded to the cloud.

But eventually, Salazar and his assistant, Alex Beljec, knew they had to bring matters back live and in person. And they knew they had to bring matters back adapting to a new reality. They needed to S, not only implementing regimens that improve athletic performance, i.e. their mandate, but do so in a safe manner.

That meant minimizing COVID-19 exposure issues as much as possible.

"We knew we had to figure out a strategy to make this work, and the biggest one involved capacity limitations," Salazar said. "We had to become more adaptable to creating something we could work with in a group setting with our teams. So we brought our work outside."
