FULLERTON, Calif. - The Big West Conference announce they had 18 teams across seven different sports recognized as recipients of the NCAA Public Recognition Award, an award that was based on teams' most recent multi-year Academic Progress Rate. The Academic Progress Rate or APR, is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams. The Public Recognition Award is given each year to teams with APRs in the top 10 percent of each sport.
The Cal State Fullerton Men's Golf team was one of those 18 Big West recipients that received the 2020 NCAA Public Recognition Award. CSUF Men's Golf ranked in the top ten percent amongst Division I golf teams, housing a perfect score of 1,000 points based off scores from the 2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18, and 2018-19 academic years.
"I'm proud of our continued academic efforts," head coach Jason Drotter said. "My guys have made a commitment to their academics as well as their athletics and their progress shows in these APR results. It means a great deal to me that our athletes graduate and leave CSUF prepared for the next chapter in their lives.This accomplishment not only reflects the efforts of our athletes it also shows that our athletic department and academic advising center has delivered for our student athletes".
While men's golf's perfect APR score allowed them to finish in the top ten percent of their sport to become eligible for the Public Recognition Award, Cal State Fullerton's perfection did not end with them alone. For the 2018-2019 academic year, several sports put up a perfect 1,000 point APR score such as men's basketball, men's cross country, women's basketball, women's cross country, women's golf, and softball.
