Fullerton Drops Fourth Straight to Cal Poly

FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton suffered its fourth straight Big West Conference loss Friday night, falling to Cal Poly 3-0 (25-13, 25-20, 25-15) at Titan Gym.

The Titans (6-13, 1-4) were outhit .312 to .118 for the match with the Mustangs (11-6, 4-2) getting double-digit kills from Raeann Griesen (17) and Adlee Van Winden (13) en route to the victory.

Shimen Fayad led the Titans with 14 kills and hit .278 (14-4-36) on the night but the rest of the team combined for 11 kills and 10 attack errors. Rachel Hall led the Titans with 22 assists while Madisen Babich led the defense with 13 digs.

The Titans never led in the opening set as Cal Poly posted 20 kills on 40 attacks with just three errors, good for a .425 attack percentage. Adlee Van Winden led the way for the Mustangs with seven kills on 11 attempts without an error. Shimen Fayad paced Fullerton with four kills in the opening frame but the Titans mustered just two other kills in the set.

Things tightened up in the second frame as both teams went back and forth early with six ties and four lead changes. The Titans eventually took a 10-9 lead in the set but the Mustangs responded with an 8-1 scoring run to take the lead for good. Fayad posted four more kills in the set for Fullerton while Madeline Schneider and Summer Kerins added three apiece in the second set.

The Mustangs ran away with the third set as Fullerton managed just eight kills in the frame with six errors on 29 attempts while the Mustangs hit at a .267 clip and the writing was on the wall as Cal Poly took the deciding frame by 10 points.

The Titans will return to action Saturday night as they host UC Santa Barbara at Titan Gym.
