INDIAN WELLS, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton women's tennis rallied to claim a 4-0 win over No. 7 Cal Poly to advance to the program's first Big West Championship match.
Cal Poly shocked the conference with their upset against No. 2 UC Davis on Friday to claim their seat in the semifinals. Cal Poly finished the season 7-14 (2-6 BWC).
Fullerton has now set a new program record with a 20-5 (6-2 BWC) overall record. Last year's 2016-17 season set the groundwork for the program's 19 win season.
The Titans conquered the doubles point once again and set themselves up early.
Fullerton dropped the first doubles match on court number two as Molly Reed and Susanne Boyden defeated Masako Makiba and Danielle Pham 6-1.
The Titans rallied on court number one as Karla Portalatin and Sarah Nuno took down Abigail Bacharach and MacKenzie Worsnop 6-3. It came down to court number three where Genevieve Zeidan and Jadie Acidera pulled out a win over Caroline Williams and Grace Olyphant 6-4.
In singles play, Portalatin edged a win over Seriana Saltzen 6-3, 6-3. Portalatin is now 16-3 in dual play and rides a six-match win streak. The junior has proven her dominance clinching the last two match's the Titans have played in.
Nuno finished shortly after defeating Boyden 6-3, 6-1 on court number two. Nuno is 17-6 in dual play and rides the same six-match win streak as her doubles partner. The two have done phenomenal in both singles and doubles play for the season.
Match point was earned by Zeidan on court number one after she defeated Worsnop 6-4, 6-2. Zeidan is 19-5 in dual play this season. The freshman has showcased her talent in her first year as a Titan.
No. 3 seed Fullerton will face off against No. 4 Hawai'i on Sunday at 9:30 a.m. at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
