GAINSVILLE, Fla. – Cal State Fullerton finished the ITA Kickoff Weekend strong, as it took down Marshall 4-1 in the third place consolation match on Sunday.
The dynamic doubles duo of Karla Portalatin and Sarah Nuno collected the first win at No.1 doubles spot over Marija Bogicevic and Stephanie Smith 6-3. Minutes later at the No. 3 spot, Cal State Fullerton nabbed the doubles point
as Danielle Pham and Jadie Acidera bested Ana Marhuenda and Anna Smith 6-2. There was no need for Genevieve Zeidan and Masako Makiba to finish against Brooke Lashway and Madison Silver, as the doubles point was already awarded to the Titans.
Singles play started off in favor of Marshall as The Herd's Ana Marhuenda defeated Pham 6-4, 6-3. Fullerton, however, did not let that affect them as they charged through the rest of singles play.
Freshmen Caisey Lee Emery turned things around for the Titans and took the lead once again with her win over Brooke Lashway 7-5, 6-2. The freshmen continued to play well for Fullerton as No. 103 Genevieve Zeidan came out victorious over Madison Silver 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 on court one. Sarah Nuno put things away for the Titans, as she clinched the victory 6-0, 3-6, 6-3 against Stephanie Smith.
The following matches were not finished due to Fullerton clinching the victory. Karla Portalatin vs. Anna Smith, and Luxizi Meng vs. Marija Bogicevic.
Fullerton's overall record improves to 2-1 for the season.
The Titans get a taste of conference play as they face off against UC Riverside in Riverside, Calif. on Feb. 3 at 11:00 a.m. PT.
