SAN JOSE, Calif. --- Cal State Fullerton set a new program record, totaling its 18th victory this season after producing a 4-3 win over San Jose State at Almaden Athletic Club on Wednesday.
The Titans are now 18-2 this season with one match remaining in the regular season as Fullerton will host Hawai'i at 11 a.m., Sunday at Titan Tennis Courts. Seniors Camille De Leon and Alexis Valenzuela will be honored.
The Spartans fall to 10-7 on the season.
For the 19th time this season, Fullerton took a 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point.
Sophomores Sarah Nuno and Karla Portalatin defeated Tamara Culibrk and Miyo Kobayashi, 6-1, at No. 2 doubles, improving the duo's record to 17-1 and extending the winning streak to 14 matches.
Seniors Camille De Leon and Alexis Valenzuela, currently ranked 51st in the country, edged Marie Klocker and Gaelle Rey, 6-4, at No. 1 doubles to win their 13th straight and improve to 16-1 on the year.
San Jose State won the first three singles matches to take a 3-1 lead, but the Titans battled back as Nuno defeated Kobayashi, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 4 singles, as she is now 12-5 on the season.
Trailing 3-2, Masako Makiba scored a 7-5, 7-6 (5) victory over Rey at No. 5 in the order to even the match.
Valenzuela then came from behind to clinch the fourth and winning point for Fullerton with a 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory over Klocker at the top of the lineup. Valenzuela has won five in a row and is 14-1 on the season.
Notes: Cal State Fullerton has not lost the doubles point this season…Fullerton's 18 victories are a new program single-season record.
