SANTA BARBARA, Calif. --- Despite starting the match by winning the doubles point, Cal State Fullerton suffered its second loss of the season, 4-1, at UC Santa Barbara on Saturday.
With the loss, the Titans are now 15-2 on the season and 3-2 in Big West Conference play as their four-match win streak was ended. The Gauchos improve to 10-9 overall and 3-1 in league play.
Seniors Camille De Leon and Alexis Valenzuela clinched the doubles point for Fullerton with a 6-4 victory over 46th-ranked Melissa Baker and Palina Dubavets at No. 1 doubles. De Leon and Valenzuela are 13-1 on the season and have won 10 in a row.
Sarah Nuno and Karla Portalatin won their 12th straight match at No. 2 doubles, defeating Amanda Atanasson and Stefani Stojic 6-4 at No. 2 doubles.
Fullerton, who has won the doubles point 16 times this season, unfortunately did not pick up a win in singles play as the Gauchos worked their way to four victories.
No. 117 Jaimee Gilbertson edged Portalatin, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 3 in the order, and Stojic dispatched Nuno, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 4 in the lineup.
At No. 5 in the order, Amanda Atanasson defeated Masako Makiba, 6-3, 6-4, while Baker needed three sets to score the match-winning point with 6-1, 5-7, 6-0 victory over Danielle Pham at the bottom of the order.
The Titans return to action at 10 a.m., Sunday at Cal Poly.
