FULLERTON, CA - Cal State Fullerton's offense slugged three more home runs on the day, but it was only enough for a split of a mid-week doubleheader with visiting UNLV as the Rebels won game one, 8-3, with the Titans rebounding for a 5-1 victory in game two on Thursday night at Anderson Field.
Fullerton moves to 29-20 overall on the season heading into this weekend's non-conference series with UC Davis. UNLV's record moves to 21-32 after the game two loss as they face San Diego State in Mountain West Conference action this weekend.
The three home runs give the Titans 49 for the season which ranks third all time in the history of the program ranking behind the school record 65 round-trippers hit in 2002 and the 54 home runs hit in 1999.
Sophomore Katie Gollhardt led all Titans with three hits on the day, including one of the three home runs.
The Titans and Aggies kick off this weekend's three-game series on Saturday (April 29) with a doubleheader beginning at noon with Sunday's (April 30) single game also beginning at 12 p.m.
GAME 1: UNLV 8, CAL STATE FULLERTON 3
The Rebels took advantage of two Titan errors with two outs in the seventh, scoring five unearned runs capped by a Maggie Livreri grand slam, en route to an 8-3 win in the doubleheader opener.
With the game tied at 3-3 and two runners on for UNLV, Brittany Freight hit a slow roller to second where it was bobbled by the Fullerton fielder, allowing Freight to reach. However, the Titans tried to get Caitlyn Paus, who strayed off third base on the play, but the throw to third handcuffed the Fullerton third baseman, allowing Paus to scamper home for the 4-3 lead.
Bri Bolinger then followed with a single up the middle to load the bases and was followed by Livreri, who took the first pitch she saw from Titans' starter Marissa Marzan (10-7) over the fence in left field for her third career grand slam and the 8-3 advantage.
Christie Robinson (7-11) then set the Titans down in the bottom of the seventh, allowing only a two-out single to Katie Gollhardt before getting a fly ball to secure the win.
UNLV got on the board quickly in the first as the Rebels put a pair on with two outs for Rosa Ordaz, who lined a shot into the gap in left centerfield for a double, scoring both runners ahead of her for the 2-0 lead.
Cal State Fullerton answered back in the second as Kiki Munoz reached on a dropped third strike and Crystal Vieyra was hit by a pitch for the 16th time this season. Robinson induced Marzan into a fielder's choice for the first out and bring up Tiffany Hoff.
The junior worked the count full before sending the next offering over the left field fence for her second home run of the season and the 3-2 advantage.
The Rebels tied it up in the third as Bolinger reached on a one-out triple and scored on Livreri's sac fly to left to tie the score.
Marzan struck out seven in the loss, with only three of the eight runs earned in the complete game effort. Hoff led the Titans with a 2-for-3 day at the plate while Bolinger was 3-for-4 for UNLV.
GAME 2: CAL STATE FULLERTON 5, UNLV 1
Junior right-hander Candice Baker pitched 5 1/3 innings of no-hit softball and Katie Gollhardt and Ashley Van Boxmeer each slugged home runs as the Titans salvaged game two of the doubleheader with a 5-1 victory.
Baker (17-8) allowed only two baserunners on walks until the sixth when Bri Bollinger walked to lead-off the inning and Brittany Freight hit a sharp single to left to break up the no-hit bid.
She finished with 12 strikeouts and allowed only two hits in the complete-game victory. It marked the seventh time this season that Baker had reached double-digits in strikeouts this season and gives her 206 for the season - moving her into eighth place on both the single season list and career lists (400).
Becky McDonald (2-5) suffered the loss, allowing five runs on six hits in six innings of work.
The Titans got on the board early as sophomore Amanda Kamekona drove home a pair with a triple in the second and later scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-0.
Fullerton then added two more in the fifth as Gollhardt (her seventh of the year) and Van Boxmeer (her 12th of the season) went back-to-back to make it 5-0. Van Boxmeer's 12 home runs this season, and 22 for her Titan career, rank her eighth on both the school's single season and career lists
UNLV finally broke through on the scoreboard in the seventh as Rosa Ordaz led off by slugging her fifth home run of the year to left field to make it 5-1. Baker then shut the Rebels down, getting a ground out and a pair of strikeouts to end the game.
Gollhardt and Van Boxmeer each had two hits in the game to lead all players.
