Softball Heads to Cathedral City for Mary Nutter Classic

FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton (8-3) is heading to Cathedral City, Calif. to participate in the Mary Nutter Classic this weekend. They will face No. 5 Washington on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. followed by Bethune-Cookman at 5:30 p.m. and be back on the field Sunday against No. 4 Oklahoma at 9:00 a.m. and finish it up against California at 2:30 p.m.

The Titans are coming off a 5-1 victory over San Diego State on Wednesday night. Ari Williams stayed red hot at the plate going 2-3 with a run scored and an RBI. She has now reached base safely in 11 games this season recording a hit in 10 of them. Alexa Neil extended her on-base streak to eight straight games as well. Williams and Neil have carried the offense thus far each hitting well above .400 accounting for 30 of the team's 72 hits this season.

The Washington Huskies enter the weekend as the number four team in the nation sporting a record of 9-1 this season. As a team, they are hitting .320 and have combined for a 1.47 ERA in the circle. The Huskies have five hitters over .400 with Sis Bates and Taryn Atlee tied for the team-lead with 13 hits. Taran Alvelo leads the pitching staff with a nice 0.69 ERA in 30.1 innings of work striking out 29 while only allowing 28 hits.

Bethune-Cookman enter the weekend with a 3-7 record struggling thus far in 2019. As a team, they are hitting just .191 totaling just 23 runs this season. The pitching staff sports a 4.39 ERA on the season and a .252 opponent's batting average. The Wildcat offense is led by Kaiya Epps-Lee who is hitting .296 with a home run and five RBI. In the circle, Victoria Guzman leads the team with a 2.07 ERA in 27 innings of work.

Oklahoma is the number five team in the nation with a 9-1 record to start the season. Offensively, they are hitting .385 as a team with 17 home runs and 84 runs scored while they have a 1.72 team ERA in the circle. The Sooner offense is led by Shay Knighten and Jocelyn Alo who are both hitting over .500 for the year. The pitching staff is led by arguably the hottest pitcher in the NCAA right now in Mariah Lopez, who has given up just one run and four hits in 26.1 innings.

Cal is the final Fullerton opponent for the weekend and they enter the weekend with a 6-5 record. The Golden Bear offense has combined for a .254 average with nine home runs and 52 runs scored. In the circle, they have a 2.92 ERA while keeping opponents to just a .209 clip. Lindsay Rood leads the offense with a .444 average, 16 hits, 13 runs and six extra-base hits. Their two main pitchers, Kamalani Dung and Zoe Conley are hovering around the 3.50 ERA mark in 27 innings of work while Alexandra Perez leads in ERA at a 0.95 mark in 14.2 innings.
