The Cal State Fullerton women's soccer team clinched its first-ever victory in the NCAA Tournament with a little help from the UNLV defense as an own goal in overtime decided Friday night's first-round NCAA Tournament contest in a 1-0 victory for the Titans over the Rebels at Titan Stadium.
Fullerton improved to 18-3 overall, winners of its last 10 consecutive matches, and advanced to the second round where the Titans will face Southern California (a 1-0 winner over Gonzaga) on Sunday (Nov. 13) at 1 p.m.
The Titans held an 18-7 advantage in shots, including an 11-1 margin in the second half, but their only goal of the match came on a shot they didn't even take. Freshman Jenesa Bradshaw sent a ball into the box that went through a crowd and sat spinning on the goal line.
Fullerton senior Rebekah Patrick made a charge, but UNLV's Tanya Roberts got there first sending the ball into her own net in the fifth-minute of overtime.
UNLV had the first three solid scoring chances of the night as Haley Partridge sent two successive point-blank shots into the arms of Titan goalkeeper Karen Bardsley. Minutes later, Roberts had another chance to get the Rebels on the board, dribbling in on a missed clear out of the Titans' defensive end, but Bardsley was there again to preserve the scoreless tie.
It would be the only three saves Bardsley had to make on the night as she earned her 10th solo shutout of the season.
Fullerton senior Erin Shelton led all players with six shots on the night while Partridge led the Rebels with five shots.
