Titans Head to Utah, Face No. 17 BYU and Utah State

FULLERTON, Calif. ­­­­– Cal State Fullerton Titans take on No. 17 BYU on Friday at 6:00 p.m. PT then finish the weekend at Utah State Sunday at 12:00 p.m. PT.

QUICK HITS:

  • Cal State Fullerton opens the season with a 2-0 record. Fullerton defeated Seattle University 2-0, then went on the road for a comeback win against Fresno State, 2-1.
  • With the win on Aug. 18 against Seattle, the Titans now have won their past four season openers.
  • Sarah Fajnor scored the game-winning goals in each of the first two games this season, the second of which was assisted by Kaycee Hoover. Fajnor was also the leading scorer last season with 16 points on seven goals and two assists.  
  • The last time the Titans opened the season at 2-0, they went on to finish the 2015 season with a 16-3-2 record.
  • The Titan defense has done a stellar job this season as GK Morgan Bertsch has only needed to make three saves in the first two games.  She played all 180 minutes in the net for the Titans and only allowed one goal.  
  • Samantha Koemans and Atlanta Primus also opened their scoring accounts as Primus scored the first goal of the season against Seattle and Koemans scored the opening goal at Fresno State.

OPPONENT AND HISTORY

No. 17 BYU
6 p.m. PT | Friday, Aug. 25 | South Field

The Titans will take on BYU for the seventh time in program history.  Their overall record against the Cougars is 0-6-1. In Provo, the Titans are 0-2. The last time out, the two teams tied at Titan Stadium in 2014.

On the year, BYU is ranked No. 17 and holds a record of 0-1-1. BYU opened on the road Aug. 18 against No. 9 Penn State and lost 3-1. The Cougars were back at home on Aug. 21 to play Ohio State where they tied 0-0.  

Utah State
Noon | Sunday Aug. 27 | Chuck & Gloria Bell Field

This is the 12th meeting against Utah State and in Logan, Utah the Titans are 3-3-0, however, their overall record is 6-4-1.  

For the season, Utah State starts off with a 2-0 record. It opened the season on Aug. 18 at home against South Dakota State winning 1-0 in double overtime. The Aggies would go on to shutout Montana on Aug. 20 at home 2-0.


IN THE PRESEASON POLL
The Titans came in second place in Big West's women's soccer preseason poll released on Aug. 10. Cal State Fullerton secured 63 points in the polls, trailing Long Beach State in first with 78 points. Titans Connie Caliz made the preseason All-Conference Team.  

2016 RECAP
The Titans finished last season 8-10-1 (5-3-0 Big West). This gave the team a fourth-place finish in the Big West Conference. Jazzmin Mancilla was out for the season after tearing her ACL in the season opener against Saint Mary's. The Titans made it to the semi-final of the Big West Conference Tournament where they fell to UC Irvine in PK's at George Allen Field in Long Beach, Calif. 

WELCOME BACK
Titans welcome back 25 members from last year's squad, including 10 starters from last year. Out of the 10, nine are seniors entering their final year with the program. Senior Morgan Bertsch, is expected to anchor the goal for the Titans.  She made four starts in net compiling, a 1-2-0 record with a save percentage of .800.  The Titans also welcome back their leading scorer from a year ago in Sarah Fajnor.  Tala Haddad makes her return to the Titan midfield.  She secured nine points for Titans scoring three goals while recording three assists.  She is expected to have a strong senior year. The senior complied 16 points on seven goals scored and two assists.
