FULLERTON, Calif. – The Cal State Fullerton women's basketball team lost its second Big West Conference game of the year to Cal Poly, 57-48, at Titan Gym on Thursday night behind a game-high 20 points from the Mustangs' Kristen Ale.

The Titans (8-9, 2-2) were able to shut down the Big West's fourth-leading scorer, Ariana Elegado, holding her to zero points through the entire first half. Ale picked up the slack, however, pouring in 10 points in the first half and adding another 10 points in the second.  The guard also three rebounds and four assists to add to her stellar performance.

"Our guards were really up to the challenge of guarding Elegado tonight," head coach Daron Park said.  "She is an explosive player, very dynamic, and does a lot of things well.  I thought we came up with a good game plan to really limit her effectiveness.  I'm really pleased with the job we did on her, but with that being said, kudos to Number 11 (Ale) for having the game she did tonight.  Now we have to start doing a better job on opposing teams supporting players because we've been able to do a great job on their main scorers.""

Cal Poly (9-8, 4-1) took control of the game midway through the first 20 minutes, going on a 10-0 run that saw a one-point Titan lead turn into a nine-point deficit in a seven-minute span.

Fullerton shot 32 percent from the field at the break and could only connect on 1-of-11 from behind the arc.  It was the free throws that really hurt CSF, however, only making 2-of-11 (18 percent) in the first half.  Cal Poly shot 37 percent from the field and drained 2-of-7 from deep, but sunk 6-of-7 from the charity stripe.  At the half, the Mustangs held the lead over the Titans 30-19.

Despite getting into some minor foul trouble by picking up her second foul halfway through the first half, Chante Miles only missed two minutes of play and led the Titans with seven points (3-of-8) and three rebounds at the half.  Ale was the game-high scorer at the half with 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting.

The Titans defense came out fighting in the second half, but the offense could not sustain the runs needed to get back into the game . Cal Poly did most of their damage against the Titans in the paint, outscoring CSF down low 20-12 in the game.

A late 11-4 run by the Titans made the game interesting as they pulled within single digits for the first time since the opening minutes of the game after a Tailer Butler jump shot cut the lead to to six with 1:40 left in the game.   The Mustangs answered by converting their pressure packed free-throw attempts to seal the victory.

"We have to learn," said Park.  "It starts with focus, it starts with preparation and it starts with mentally being tuned in to be ready to play basketball.  Our post-game talk focused on trying to find that spark and getting excited to play a very dangerous UC Santa Barbara team on Saturday."

Miles led the Titans offensive charge as the only player to score in double figures on Thursday.  She finished with 16 points on 6-of-13 shooting from the field and 2-of-5 from behind the arc.  It was the 15th-straight game Miles has scored in double figures this season and 16th game overall.

The Titans are back in action this week at Titan Gym to take on UC Santa Barbara on Saturday at 6:00 p.m.
