Fullerton Hosts Utah Valley, Faces Dons at Neutral Site

FULLERTON, Calif. – Following its loss on the road to Portland, Cal State Fullerton looks to bounce back as it hosts Utah Valley at Titan Stadium in a doubleheader with the women's soccer team on Friday at 7:30 p.m. The Titans then head south to matchup with San Francisco at San Diego State University at 3 p.m. Sunday afternoon in a neutral site fixture.

QUICK HITS

• Last week Cal State Fullerton had a dominant performance over Santa Clara leading to a 2-0 victory Friday night at Titan Stadium. The Titans followed up the win with a tough loss to Portland on the road.

• Fullerton gave up five goals to Portland in the loss Monday night, however, the last time the Titans allowed five goals in a game was in 2000 when they eventually rallied to win the conference tournament and make it to the NCAA Tournament

• The Titans strong defense held up against Santa Clara, giving up just six shots in the match while allowing only one shot on goal.

• First year transfer Mark Hernandez scored his first goal as a Titan in the 2-0 win over Santa Clara.

• Kuntz is in his 4th season at the helm of the Titans. Cal State Fullerton is 35-27-11 under his leadership. 

IN THE STANDINGS
Fullerton is currently in third place in the South Division with a 2-2 record behind CSUN in first place with a 2-1 record and UC Irvine with a 2-1-1 record. 

OPPONENT AND HISTORY

Utah Valley
7:30 p.m. | Friday, Sept. 8 | Titan Stadium

The Titans and Wolverines have only met once in the history of the programs, Utah Valley defeated Fullerton in 2015, 2-1 in Utah.

Utah Valley travels to Titan Stadium with a record of 1-1 on the season. The Wolverines loss came against the Titans South Division rivals, CSUN, Utah Valley lost 2-1 in a close game at Clyde Field in Utah. The Wolverines one win came against Akron, who was ranked No. 13 at the time, in a 1-0 win which was also a home game for Utah Valley. 

Both of the Wolverines goals have come from senior defenders. Giovanny Vazquez scored in the second half in the match against Akron to give the Wolverines the victory. Nic Harguindeguy netted Utah Valley's only goal against CSUN. 

San Francisco  
3 p.m. | Sunday, Sept. 10 | SDSU Sports Deck 

Fullerton faces the University of San Francisco for the 21st time in the history of the program. The Titans trail in the all-time matchup between the two teams with a 6-12-2 record. Fullerton has, however, won the last two matches against San Francisco with the last meeting coming in 2016 in San Francisco where The Titans won 1-0.

San Francisco heads into the neutral site meeting struggling through the first four games of the season with a 0-4 record. While the Dons are still winless four games in, three of the four losses have come against top-25 ranked teams which include No. 25 UCLA, No. 4 Indiana and No. 21 Butler. San Francisco has been outscored 7-16 throughout the losses. Senior midfielder Leon Schwarzer leads the Dons with six points on three goals. 

Goals by Committee
The Titans have scored three goals over the first four games of the season and all by different players. Forward Samuel Goni scored his first goal as a Titan in the Titans 1-0 win against Wofford while first-year transfer Mark Hernandez also scored his first goal in a Fullerton uniform in the team's 2-0 victory over Santa Clara. Ross McPhie netted Fullerton's first goal against Santa Clara. McPhie continued to add to his impressive statline throughout his career at Fullerton as the goal marked his eighth since joining the Titans in 2015.
