Three Second-Half Goals Down Titans

Box Score (PDF)

FULLERTON, Calif. -- Alex Cannas and Ian Ramos scored goals in the first three minutes of play in each half, Cannas in the first and Ramos in the second, but it wasn't enough as UC Riverside scored three goals in the final 40 minutes to snatch the No. 3 seed in the South and send the Titans home for the season.

The Titans conclude the 2013 campaign, 6-11-1, 3-6-1, while the Highlanders improve to 9-7-3, 4-5-1 and will head to Davis to face the No. 2 seed from the North division of the Big West in the first round of the tournament.

For Fullerton, it is a difficult loss to fathom. Cannas goal came as many fans were just settling in (2:37) as took flurry-defended passes from Ramos and then Steven Ortiz and drilled it beyond the reach of goalkeeper Ashkan Khoshravi. The goal was his second of the season.

Coming out of the locker room for the second period, Ramos shot was off a lovely cross from Ortiz (from Cannas) from the left side and seemed to indicate that the Titans early offensive attacks might launch the team to the tournament. The Titans outshot the Highlanders, 10-3, in the first half and appeared to continue that domination until about the 60-minute mark.

Riverside got goals by Ivan Garcia (58:59) and Eric Gonzalez (67:31) to knot the score and narrowed the shooting advantage gap. Then, in the 85th minute, the dagger came in the form of a Philipp Dominique rebound and finish from about 16 yards out after a corner kick was knocked away by Titans' goalkeeper, Bryan Escalante. The Titans got a couple of looks in the final moments, but Khoshravi was up to each challenge to the delight of 606 fans on hand.

The loss marks the final match for five outgoing Titans seniors.
